Why Does My Dog Eat Grass? The Answer May Surprise You


We've all heard the explanations of why dogs eat grass. There are certainly plenty of them, when asked, people will tell you that your dog is eating grass because he has an upset stomach, or is sick and needs to eat grass in order to settle your stomach or vomit, so they will feel better.

Other people will offer you an explanation that your dog will eat grass, because there is something missing in his diet.

These different explanations leave the new dog owners confused and not knowing whether to take their dog to see your vet, or to change their dog food.

A recent survey done in the Davis School of Veterinary Medicine may have reached a definitive answer to this question. This study looked at 1600 survey that asked pet owners questions about their dogs diet, race, gender, age and whether or not they have been sterilized, and plant your dogs eating habits.

of the respondents revealed that 68% of dogs eating the plants on a daily or weekly basis. With only 8% showing no signs of illness before ingesting grass, which would mean that most dogs do not eat grass because of illness.

Research has shown that dogs that showed signs of illness before ingesting grass were more likely to vomit than those who did not show signs of disease.

The second finding of this study was that younger dogs are more likely than older dogs eat grass or other plants that are less likely to appear ill before eating the grass and less likely to vomit after snacking on plants .

While all of this information is interesting as it proves?
